let the laughter commence
Apr. 6th, 2009 10:28 pmi saw my first comedy festival show last night. i feel like it has now officially begun. i left
nixwilliams and
johnnypurple at home, working their way through the lord o' the rings trilogy. on the tram into the city, i found myself getting ridiculously excited. i am, after all, a comedy nerdling, a humour geekazoid. 1000 years of german humour.
i arrived at the venue in plenty of time, which was lucky, because it was not easy to figure out how to get to it. it was on the 2nd floor of the nicholas building on swanston st. i tried the stairs first, but the door halfway up was locked, so back down i trudged, and tried the lift. there was a couple waiting there patiently, but the lift didn't appear to be in any rush. eventually, it arrived, and slowly revealed its tiny innards to us. the three of us crammed in, a slowly ascended the two storeys to our destination. we arrived, to be greeted and ushered through to the bar by henning wehn - one of the shows stars. a sold out audience (around half of whom were german or of german descent) then crammed into a tiny room, took our seats, and let the teutonic jolliness commence.
the gig was good overall, and i laughed heartily throughout, although there were a few tech issues which disrupted the flow somewhat. and the performance space was far too small for the act, which combined traditional (but very clever and utterly hilarious stand up) with german cabaret of broom dancing, folk music, magic ping pong balls, mozart, yodelling, wagner, performing gnomes, history lessons, and an alpine horn made from bunnings pipes.
highly recommended.
also highly recommended is bed. that's where I'm going now.
g'night, net.
