Caught Up...
Apr. 6th, 2008 11:13 pmNearly a week after getting the internet back, I am finally caught up on all my feeds. I can breathe again. A few cool little things to share with you.
First up, I think I may have said it before, but the Torchwood team are definitely going for the Ladytron look:

Speaking of which, a new Ladytron album is coming in June, and if you pop over to their website, you can download yourself a track from it.
I've been quite excited by a lot of new music this year. Many of my favourite acts of the past have released, or will be releasing, albums, or releasing special editions of classic albums: Supergrass, REM, Flight Of The Conchords, The B52s, Billy Bragg, Stephen Malkmus, Portishead, Ladytron, The Breeders... to name but 9, all have new albums out or on the way. The Lemonheads, Whiskeytown and Beck have all released special editions of some of my all-time favourite albums.
And I've discovered music too. This year, I've fallen in love with:
Rachel Unthank And The Winterset (I love them all so hard!), Pikelet (and I'm not just biased because I used to be in a band with her), Kelley Stoltz (I am really enjoying his latest album), Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings (just awesome)...
And I'm sure there are many more in all the above categories that I have forgotten.
Also, if you're at all obsessive about the Beatles, you may want to check out this post. Four words: Sgt. Pepper. Master. Tapes.
Ah, internet... How I've missed thee.
While off-line, I actually managed to read a book or two! Remember them? I read and thoroughly enjoyed The Anubis Gates, by Tim Powers. I must admit that my hopes weren't high, especially after reading the prologue, which was dense, slow, and serious. However, once I got into the story proper, it really picked up - this book has it all: action! adventure! humour! time travel! body swap! werewolves! magic! mud! crazy shoes! hair removal! cockneys! Egyptian mythology! paradoxes! 19th Century British poets! (Byron! Coleridge!), cloning! evil clowns! cross dressing! Beatles songs! What more could you ask for?
I've been trying to get hold of one of Powers' other books, On Stranger Tides, for some time now. I've never seen it in a bookshop in this country, and I've tried ordering it twice direct from the publisher, and twice it seems to have been swallowed up by the global postal system. The reason I've been so keen to get my hands on it is because this book is supposedly the primary influence for my favourite computer game series ever (The Secret Of Monkey Island), as well as for the Pirates of the Caribbean film (the similarity between the two is rather striking - I just presumed PotC nicked it all from Monkey Island, but you know what they say about presumption).
Anyway, it's time for bed now. Sleep tight...
